Over 2,200 students with disabilities are currently enrolled in both special and regular schools, highlighting the commitment to inclusive education. This announcement was made by Education Minister Aseri Radrodro during the recent Special and Inclusive Education (SIE) Talanoa, AGM, Wellness, Awards (TAWA) Conference.
Minister Radrodro emphasized the crucial role of educators in shaping the future of children with disabilities, stating, “The progress we have seen is truly commendable, but we must also acknowledge that there is still more work to be done.” He noted that the ultimate objective is to ensure that all students, no matter their abilities, have access to high-quality education.
The Minister praised various initiatives aimed at supporting students in transitioning to regular schools, implementing the new Year 1-4 Learning and Needs curriculum, and increasing the budget allocated for special and inclusive education. He took a moment to recognize the dedication of special and inclusive educators, who have remained committed despite numerous challenges.
In his remarks, Mr. Radrodro encouraged teachers to continue their vital work with empathy and inclusivity, asserting that while awards serve as tokens of appreciation, the real impact of their work is immeasurable. He expressed confidence in the incredible potential of these educators and their exceptional contribution to the lives of their students.
Furthermore, he acknowledged the valuable support from development partners, including the Government of Australia, the Fiji Disabled Persons Federation, and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities.
This commitment to inclusive education reflects a hopeful shift towards ensuring that all children, regardless of their abilities, receive the education they need to thrive. By investing in special and inclusive education, we are not only empowering individual students but also fostering a more inclusive society.
In summary, the call for continued efforts in the field of special and inclusive education highlights an essential movement towards ensuring every child’s right to education.
