Around 2,500 women micro business owners from across Fiji gathered in Suva last Friday to celebrate the 14th South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) Foundation Day and the annual awards for 2023, which honored their achievements and contributions to the economy.
SPBD, established in December 2010 by American social entrepreneur Greg Casagrande, is Fiji’s largest microfinance network, serving over 7,000 members through eight branches in Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Ovalau, and Taveuni. Since its inception, SPBD has assisted more than 20,000 women across 450 Fijian villages and communities.
During the event, Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, praised the women for significantly improving their families’ lives and positively impacting their communities. He remarked, “Tonight is about more than just award presentations. It’s about honoring the resilience, creativity, and dedication of the women transforming their lives and uplifting their families and communities in our beloved nation.”
The theme of this year’s awards, “Women-led micro enterprises: enriching lives and building future,” highlights the transformative role women play in Fiji’s socio-economic landscape. Ratu Wiliame emphasized that economically empowered women act as key agents of change, promoting prosperity for future generations.
Chief judge and SPBD independent board director, Lorainne Seeto, stated that selecting the winners was challenging due to the extraordinary qualities of each finalist.
Greg Casagrande encouraged SPBD women to pursue their dreams daily, emphasizing the importance of their children receiving complete education, including tertiary education.
The main accolade, the SPBD Businesswoman of the Year award, was awarded to Elena Tinai from the Lautoka Branch’s Saru Centre. Other recognitions included the Centre of the Year Award for Waimanu Centre, Suva Branch; Centre Chief of the Year Award for Alisi Naiqama; and several others highlighting individual achievements in various categories.
The event showcased the accomplishments and aspirations of women in microenterprise, fostering a spirit of community and economic empowerment.
