The Coalition Government has announced a significant investment of $150 million in the Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Scheme (TSLS) as part of its strategy to bridge the divide between education and employment. This was conveyed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during the Golden Jubilee celebrations at Waidina College last week.
Professor Prasad explained that, through collaboration with various education partners, the government is providing scholarships for 300 students to engage in industry-based training and earn a Certificate or Diploma with prominent employers like Energy Fiji Limited and Telecom.
“This initiative will greatly expand opportunities for these 300 students, enabling them to secure employment with the companies that trained them upon completing their programs,” he stated.
Additionally, the government has introduced a Hardship Assistance Scheme aimed at supporting private students who excel academically yet face financial challenges due to circumstances beyond their control.
“Students pursuing studies at all levels, from diplomas to degrees, will benefit from this scheme,” said Prasad.
He also highlighted the Coalition Government’s Back-to-School Support Payment of $200 per student for families with incomes below $50,000, which is part of its broader commitment to enhancing education and ensuring children receive necessary support.
“These new initiatives reflect our investment in education, demonstrating our dedication to empowering citizens through education, skills, and employment opportunities, aligned with the new National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050,” he added.
