The Coalition Government has announced a significant investment aimed at bridging the gap between education and employment, with $150 million allocated to the Tertiary Scholarship and Loan Scheme (TSLS). This initiative was emphasized by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during the Golden Jubilee celebrations at Waidina College last week.
Professor Prasad indicated that through collaborations with key educational stakeholders, the government will provide scholarships to 300 students, enabling them to participate in industry-based training and earn Certificates or Diplomas with notable employers like Energy Fiji Limited and Telecom. He stated, “This will certainly expand the horizons of some 300 students, who will be able to work for the employers that trained them after completing their program.”
In addition, the government has launched the Hardship Assistance Scheme to aid private students who excel academically but face financial difficulties due to circumstances beyond their control. “Through this scheme, students studying at all levels, from diplomas to degrees, will be supported,” he explained.
Furthermore, the Coalition Government has implemented a Back-to-School Support Payment of $200 for each student from families earning below $50,000. This initiative is part of the government’s broader commitment to enhancing education and ensuring that children have the necessary support for their academic pursuits.
Professor Prasad remarked, “These new schemes reflect more than just an investment in education. This demonstrates our government’s commitment to empower our people with an education as well as skills and opportunities for employment, which are integral to the new National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.”
