Empowering Future Leaders: First Lady’s Call to Action at Fiji Girl Guides Centennial

First Lady Madam Vilomena Katonivere delivered a poignant message at the Fiji National Girl Guides Centennial Camp 2024 in Labasa, addressing concerning trends among youth, particularly the use of social media platform Telegram for illicit activities such as offering drugs and sexual services. She called on attendees to remain vigilant about their surroundings, choices, and associations, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding young lives.

While highlighting the theme “100 Years of Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders: Honoring Our Past, Inspiring Our Future,” Madam Vilomena stressed the necessity of a united front in tackling these fresh challenges. She encouraged parents, guardians, teachers, and guide leaders to foster a “safe space” for open discussions to address pressing social issues confronting young people.

“We must work collectively with stakeholders to ensure our girls and youth are well-informed and empowered to make the right choices, steering clear of potential dangers,” she stated, advocating for teaching girls to confidently refuse harmful influences.

As the patron of the Fiji Girl Guides, Madam Vilomena paid tribute to past leaders who dedicated their lives to the organization, bridging the legacy of deceased members with current leadership. She honored several influential figures, including Mrs. Tuikoro, Mrs. Vakasilimi, Mrs. Utovou, Adi Sainimili Dyer, Ms. Bale Vaniqi, and others who have played crucial roles in mentoring and guiding the movement over the years.

Mrs. Sese Matarugu, the Divisional Northern Officer of the Girl Guides Association, reported that 789 participants from various divisions, including Yasawa and Moala, are attending the three-day centenary camp. She expressed hopes that the activities planned would empower the girls with valuable skills applicable to their daily lives.
