Forty-seven students from Nadi, trained by police officers, are now ready to assume leadership roles in their communities. These students, hailing from various schools in Nadi and Sigatoka, participated in a two-day Blue Light leadership training and practical skills development program held at Korovuto College in Nadi.
The program was organized with the support of Blue Light, a registered charity in New Zealand that partners with the police to implement youth programs and activities. Blue Light aims to reduce the chances of young individuals becoming offenders or victims of crime while enhancing the relationships between the police, youth, parents, and the community.
On Wednesday, the 47 students graduated from the program.
Divisional Police Commander West Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa urged the students to become catalysts for change in their schools and communities.
“Keep a close eye on everything you have learned. We gathered you from different parts of Nadi because we see the potential in you as young leaders,” SSP Vaisewa stated.
He highlighted issues faced by some peers, including participation in risky behaviors such as drug use, sexual offenses, and theft.
“Some of your peers are engaging in drug use, glue sniffing, and inappropriate exchanges involving explicit photos for money and sex. This contributes to a negative perception of our youth today, presenting a significant challenge for our beloved Fiji,” he cautioned.
SSP Vaisewa emphasized the importance of making wise choices. “That is the path some of your peers are following, but you still have the chance to choose the right path,” he encouraged. He also motivated the students to acknowledge their worth and potential.
“Understand your potential and the significance of your choices. Regardless of what others say about you, recognize your value and abilities. You were selected for this program to be agents of change,” he concluded.
