Empowering Fiji’s Youth: A Week of Innovation and Opportunity

Students at Rampur College in Navua participated last month in an event focused on the importance of Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET). The school organized a TVET and Enterprising Week aimed at educating students about work-based learning and professional development, which are essential for their future careers after high school.

According to the UNESCO International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET provides practical training that helps apprentices gain vital skills and knowledge across various industries. This year’s TVET Week theme, “Empowering Fiji’s Youth for Local and Global Challenges,” was represented with the color green to align with initiatives promoting environmental sustainability within TVET.

The Ministry of Education emphasized that the purpose of the TVET and Enterprise Week was to advocate for TVET as a crucial element in education and to enhance students’ soft skills by showcasing their projects and skills acquired through their vocational studies. The event aimed at fostering skills development, promoting enterprise education, and encouraging students to become creators of jobs instead of merely seeking them.

Throughout the week, schools were tasked with organizing activities that reflect the theme, with the expectation of introducing new initiatives distinct from those of previous years. Rampur College’s principal, Damenthi Vunitabua, noted that a fashion show featured prominently during their week, highlighting students’ talents in fashion design and tailoring. A standout presentation was made by Year 12 student Caleb Nacewa, who created the outfits on display.

In addition to fashion, students showcased their skills in cooking, automotive work, and entrepreneurship. Rampur College was one of many schools across the nation that celebrated TVET Week, highlighting the significance of technical and vocational training in today’s job market.
