The Asco Foundation has launched a campaign focused on the online safety of children, collaborating with Datec (Fiji) Pte Ltd. The initiative kicked off its first school visit at Deenbandhoo Memorial School in Suva last month. Named “Think Before You Click,” the program aims to raise cybersecurity awareness and educate primary school students on the significance of online safety and responsible digital behavior.
William Raione, the assistant headteacher, highlighted the initiative’s relevance due to the escalating internet exposure among children. He stated, “Most children have access to the Internet, and they need cyber knowledge and skills to be safe online. This workshop is beneficial in teaching them how to secure their accounts and act responsibly online.” Raione also pointed out the increasing concern of cyberbullying, emphasizing its potential devastating impact, especially when children refrain from discussing their experiences with adults.
Mr. Raione expressed support for the initiative, believing it could help prevent such issues. The program targets students in grades 6, 7, and 8, aimed at those who can understand the importance of cybersecurity. It is designed to educate students and motivate them to share their knowledge with family and friends, thereby fostering a community-wide awareness.
Ronald Kumar, CEO of Asco Motors and project leader, stressed the initiative’s long-term vision. He stated, “We want students to take what they’ve learned at home and spread the word. The idea is for this knowledge to spread, just as cyber-attacks do, so that more people in Fiji become aware of online safety.” He also mentioned that teaching these values early will help students navigate the digital world securely.
The Asco Foundation has invested $20,000 in the program, which aims to reach ten schools this year, with plans for further growth. Deenbandhoo Memorial School marked this vital beginning, with future visits planned for more schools in the Suva and Nausori areas.
The impact of the program has already been noticeable among the students at Deenbandhoo. Raione noted, “The students have learned a lot from this program, and it’s information they’ll take back to their families. I’m confident this will help prevent cyber risks in our communities.”
This campaign demonstrates the Asco Foundation’s dedication to community development, with a specific focus on combating the rising issue of cybersecurity for Fiji’s youth. As the digital landscape expands, initiatives of this nature are essential to ensure the next generation is prepared to navigate online safety challenges.
