Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru made a notable effort this Christmas Eve by visiting villages in Vanua Levu to present Income Generating Project (IGP) grants. During his visit, he engaged with the Nailou Youth Club in Nailou Village, Cakaudrove, which had applied for an IGP grant this year. The club received $5,000 worth of beekeeping equipment, including four double honey boxes, tools for honey farming, and protective gear.
In addition to the IGP grant, Mr. Saukuru also provided sports equipment for volleyball, netball, rugby, and beach volleyball, thus promoting both youth development and sports involvement in the community. He highlighted that this initiative aims to empower young people, especially in the more remote areas of Fiji, ensuring that no one is overlooked.
Mr. Saukuru’s journey to the village required a 30-minute boat ride due to the lack of road access, which signifies the ministry’s commitment to reaching out and uplifting communities nationwide.
He later visited the Sawani Youth Club at Sawani Village, where he delivered a solar-powered freezer to support sustainable income generation for the club, as well as additional sports equipment. Again, he emphasized the ministry’s mission to empower youth in rural areas.
Additionally, he reached out to Anasa Kaitoa, a determined young farmer from Naruwai Village, who received an IGP grant that will provide him with crucial farming tools. This support is intended to help improve Mr. Kaitoa’s farming operations, which produce a variety of crops essential for both his livelihood and the community’s needs.
Mr. Saukuru’s visits reflect a genuine effort to bolster youth engagement and agriculture in Fiji, showcasing the government’s dedication to fostering resilience and self-reliance within rural communities. This initiative is a hopeful reminder of the positive impact that targeted support can have on young individuals and their communities as a whole.
