On Christmas Eve, Jese Saukuru, the Minister for Youth and Sports, made a remarkable visit to villages in Vanua Levu, demonstrating a commitment to the empowerment of youth through the distribution of Income Generating Project (IGP) grants. Saukuru was the only Member of Parliament to personally visit these communities during the holiday, highlighting the importance of engagement in rural areas.

One of the key stops during his visit was at Nailou Village, where he met with the Nailou Youth Club, composed of 25 members who had successfully applied for an IGP grant. The group received $5,000 worth of beekeeping equipment, which included four double honey boxes with bees and essential farming tools such as a smoker and safety gear. This initiative not only fosters entrepreneurship among the youth but also encourages sustainable agricultural practices in the community.

Additionally, Saukuru provided sports equipment, including gear for volleyball, netball, rugby, and beach volleyball, further promoting physical activity and sports development among the village’s youth. He emphasized the ministry’s dedication to empowering young people and ensuring that resources are made available even in the most remote parts of Fiji.

His journey to Nailou epitomizes the effort to reach isolated communities, illustrating the ministry’s mission to uplift and inspire them. The minister’s travel involved a 30-minute boat ride, reflecting the lengths taken to deliver these vital resources.

Saukuru also visited the Sawani Youth Club in Sawani Village, where he handed over a solar-powered freezer to aid in sustainable income generation alongside more sports equipment. He reiterated the importance of not leaving rural communities behind, as the ministry continues to push for the betterment of Fiji’s youth.

In Bua, Saukuru engaged with Anasa Kaitoa, a dedicated young farmer from Naruwai Village who received an IGP grant. The support provided to Kaitoa, including essential farming tools, highlights the ministry’s commitment to agriculture and rural development, enabling farmers to overcome challenges and thrive. Kaitoa’s farm produces various vegetables, which not only supports his livelihood but also fulfills the needs of his community.

Overall, Jese Saukuru’s efforts reflect a positive stride towards fostering resilience in rural communities, empowering youth, and promoting sustainable livelihoods through practical support and engagement in sports and agriculture. This initiative can inspire other regions to follow suit, fostering a sense of unity and growth across the nation.
