Twenty-six micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) participated in a recent refresher workshop focused on human resources (HR) management, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing their operational effectiveness. The event, organized by Business Assistance Fiji (BAF) and facilitated by Watesoni Nata, managing director of Meditation Pacific, took place last week in Suva.
Participants engaged in comprehensive training sessions covering essential HR aspects, including policies, employment contracts, job descriptions, recruitment, compliance regulations, wage laws, FNPF (Fiji National Provident Fund) compliance, and leveraging AI to optimize HR management.
Local fashion designer Mami Loogie from Hauz of ML expressed the session’s value, stating, “Understanding key HR procedures such as the employment grievance procedure, disciplinary procedure, and code of conduct is essential for our growth.” Similarly, Heritage Kava’s owner, Hannah Saunitoga, recognized the workshop’s importance, especially for businesses in rural areas like Levuka. She emphasized that proper HR compliance was crucial not just for their kava business but also for protecting the local workforce, which contributes significantly to the community.
Nitika Singh, acting general manager at BAF, highlighted that the workshop provided an invaluable opportunity for business owners to gain knowledge that will aid in navigating employment regulations and improving workforce management. “It was wonderful to see businesses from a range of sectors engaging in discussions and sharing experiences to cultivate a more compliant and productive workplace,” she remarked.
Moreover, BAF continues to support MSMEs through its partnership with Vodafone Fiji, allowing businesses to access the VitiKart platform—an online marketplace designed to help them expand their market reach. During the workshop, Shimneet Chand, a product manager at VitiKart, showcased how MSMEs could benefit from selling their products on the platform, which offers reduced commissions for participants associated with BAF.
This concerted push towards professional development not only enhances the skills of local entrepreneurs but also aligns with broader initiatives aimed at bolstering economic growth and sustainability in Fiji.
By strengthening HR capabilities and market presence, these MSMEs are well-positioned to thrive in Fiji’s competitive business landscape, promoting both their own success and the broader prosperity of their communities.
