The 2024 National Agriculture Show began today at the Valelevu Grounds in Nasinu, focusing on empowering farmers through innovation and resilience to ensure that agriculture flourishes even in challenging conditions.
During the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, highlighted agriculture’s vital role as the foundation of Fijian society. The three-day event follows the theme “Empowering Farmers, Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate Smart Agriculture,” emphasizing the essential contributions of farmers to the nation’s development and sustainability.
Gavoka recognized the traditional landowners, the Na Vanua o Matanikutu I Navisere, and welcomed a diverse audience that included government officials, diplomats, civil society groups, farmers, and students. He stressed that agriculture is not merely an economic sector but a way of life that supports families, communities, and the overall economy, while also acknowledging the challenges posed by climate change and volatile global markets.
He introduced several government initiatives designed to enhance agricultural productivity, including the Farm to Fork initiative, which aims to link local farmers with the tourism industry by incorporating locally sourced products into the supply chain. This initiative, supported by various ministries and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, not only promotes Fijian cuisine but also encourages sustainable tourism and reduces environmental impact.
Gavoka also reported optimistic statistics, stating that exports of fresh and chilled products rose by 16% in the first half of 2024, while imports decreased by 3%, resulting in a savings of $17 million for Fiji.
Despite these advances, he urged for ongoing initiatives to provide farmers with essential training and market access. He concluded his address with a rallying call for collaboration: “Together we can build a robust agricultural sector that fights poverty and improves the living standards for all Fijians.”
