Small businesses play a crucial role in Fiji’s economy, contributing 18% to its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and providing employment for 60% of the workforce. Acknowledging their significance, the Fijian government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting National Small and Medium Enterprises (NSMEs) as essential contributors to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Recently, an empowering initiative took place, benefiting four entrepreneurs from Lamini Village in Taveuni. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, handed them a ‘Grant Agreement’ as part of the Ministry’s Trade Enhancement Programme.
This grant is designed to assist these roadside entrepreneurs in growing and expanding their businesses, highlighting the government’s dedication to bolstering small enterprises and promoting economic development, particularly in rural communities.
Overall, this initiative not only aids local entrepreneurs but also reinforces the government’s ongoing efforts to foster economic resilience across Fiji. By investing in small businesses, the government is laying the groundwork for sustainable growth and improved livelihoods for communities. This endeavor presents a hopeful outlook for the future of small businesses in Fiji, encouraging more entrepreneurs to step forward and contribute to the economy.
