“Empowering Fiji: A New Era of Open Dialogue and Support”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, stated that citizens are now experiencing greater freedom and are encouraged to engage openly with the Government and its officials. He made these remarks during a meeting with farmers and residents from various areas, including Viria, Muaniweni, Ilahabad, Urcalia, and Vatoa Street, together with his team from the Ministry of Finance, and representatives from the Fiji Police Force and other ministries.

Professor Prasad emphasized, “I think we have taken that fear out of the people. People are much more free now.” The local community expressed gratitude for the Government’s continued support, including new initiatives such as back-to-school assistance.

During the meeting, residents raised concerns related to access to clean drinking water, the condition of rural roads, drainage issues, farm theft, stray animals, agricultural extension services, medical services, and the impact of illicit drugs on communities.

Professor Prasad noted that the Ministry of Agriculture has been allocated a substantial budget to assist not only sugarcane farmers but all agricultural producers. He mentioned that subsidies for herbicides and pesticides are now available.

Reassuring the attendees, he confirmed the Coalition Government’s dedication to addressing their concerns promptly, while highlighting the pressing issue of drug-related crime in Fiji, which is resulting in increased arrests. He said, “We need to protect our schools, our children, villages, and settlements.”

Additionally, Professor Prasad announced efforts to enhance the capabilities of the Police Force and highlighted ongoing improvements in the country’s health services. He remarked, “The health centres around the country were falling apart. We still haven’t been able to fix everything but progressively it is being done.”

He affirmed that the Coalition Government will continue to hold regular meetings and is committed to an inclusive approach that engages all community levels in decision-making and tackling significant issues related to community and national development.
