The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that climate-smart agriculture will be a key focus at the upcoming 2024 National Agriculture Show, scheduled for October 15 to 18. Under the theme “Empowering Farmers: Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate-Smart Agriculture,” Minister Vatimi Rayalu highlighted the visible impacts of climate change on agriculture in Fiji, noting issues such as saltwater intrusion affecting both coastal and inland areas.

The four-day event aims to gather farmers, agricultural experts, industry leaders, and the public to discuss the challenges posed by climate change. Participants will have the chance to engage in hands-on sessions, demonstrations, and discussions about the latest advancements in climate-smart agriculture.

Rayalu emphasized the inclusion of public participation in side events, where experts will lead discussions on topics like soil health and smart farming techniques. He also stressed the importance of utilizing traditional crops that have shown resilience over time, suggesting a focus on propagating these varieties rather than creating numerous hybrids.

In addition to crop exhibitions, the National Agriculture Show will showcase new livestock breeds and highlight techniques in animal health and production. Visitors can look forward to demonstrations on biogas production and advanced livestock practices, providing a platform for farmers to express their concerns directly to ministry officials.

The event will feature a “Farmers’ Village,” where local farmers will display their produce and value-added products. Attendees can enjoy interactive exhibits, farm-to-table experiences, and educational activities suitable for all ages.

Rayalu invited farmers, school children, and the general public to attend the 2024 Agriculture Show, emphasizing the importance of celebrating the innovations that are shaping the future of agriculture and promoting a more sustainable and productive industry.
