The 2024 National Agriculture Show has officially launched at the Valelevu Grounds in Nasinu, with a focus on empowering farmers through innovation and resilience to help agriculture thrive despite challenges.
During the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, highlighted the critical importance of agriculture as a foundational aspect of Fijian society.
Centered around the theme “Empowering Farmers, Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate Smart Agriculture,” the three-day event emphasizes the vital role farmers play in the nation’s development and sustainability.
Gavoka honored the traditional custodians of the land, the Na Vanua o Matanikutu I Navisere, acknowledging their leadership and welcoming a diverse audience that included government officials, diplomats, civil society representatives, farmers, and students.
He stressed that agriculture is not only an economic sector but also a lifestyle that supports families, communities, and the economy, while recognizing the increasing challenges posed by climate change and volatile global markets.
Gavoka also discussed various government initiatives aimed at boosting agricultural productivity, such as the Farm to Fork initiative. This program aims to connect local farmers with the tourism sector by incorporating locally grown produce into its supply chain. Spearheaded by several ministries and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, it promotes Fijian cuisines while fostering sustainable tourism and reducing the carbon footprint.
Furthermore, he presented encouraging statistics, noting a 16% increase in exports of fresh and chilled products during the first half of 2024, alongside a 3% decrease in imports, resulting in a savings of $17 million for Fiji.
Despite these advancements, he urged continued support for farmers through essential resources, training, and market access.
In conclusion, Gavoka called for collective action: “Together we can build a robust agricultural sector that combats poverty and improves the standard of living for all Fijians.”
