Empowering Farmers: Join the Climate-Smart Revolution at Agriculture Show 2024!

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that climate-smart agriculture will be the focal point of the upcoming 2024 National Agriculture Show, scheduled for October 15 to 18.

Under the theme “Empowering Farmers: Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate-Smart Agriculture,” Minister Vatimi Rayalu highlighted the noticeable impacts of climate change on agriculture in Fiji, citing issues like saltwater intrusion affecting coastal and river areas.

This four-day event aims to gather farmers, agricultural experts, industry leaders, and the public to address these pressing challenges. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on sessions, demonstrations, and discussions on the latest advancements in climate-smart practices.

Rayalu plans to organize side events allowing the public to join expert-led discussions on various topics, including soil health and innovative farming techniques. He emphasized the need to adopt climate-smart approaches by focusing on traditional crops that have demonstrated resilience over the years.

“Rather than developing numerous hybrids, we prefer to propagate traditional varieties that have proven effective over time,” he remarked.

In addition to crops, the National Agriculture Show will introduce new livestock breeds and highlight animal health and production practices. Attendees can look forward to demonstrations on biogas production and other modern livestock management techniques, and there will be opportunities for farmers to voice concerns directly to ministry officials.

The event will feature a “Farmers’ Village,” where local farmers can showcase their crops and value-added products, along with interactive exhibits and educational activities suitable for all ages.

“I encourage farmers, school children, and the general public to attend the Agriculture Show 2024 as we celebrate the innovations that are shaping the future of agriculture and strive for a more sustainable and productive industry,” Rayalu added.
