The 2024 National Agriculture Show kicked off today at the Valelevu Grounds in Nasinu with the goal of empowering farmers through innovation and resilience, ensuring that agriculture flourishes even in challenging conditions.
During the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, highlighted agriculture’s vital role as the backbone of Fijian society. The three-day event, themed “Empowering Farmers, Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate Smart Agriculture,” underscores the essential contribution of farmers to the nation’s development and sustainability.
Gavoka acknowledged the traditional landowners, the Na Vanua o Matanikutu I Navisere, honoring their leadership, and welcomed various attendees including government officials, diplomats, civil society organizations, farmers, and students. He emphasized that agriculture is more than just an industry; it is a way of life that supports families, communities, and the economy, while also recognizing the challenges posed by climate change and fluctuating global markets.
He discussed government initiatives designed to enhance agricultural productivity, such as the Farm to Fork initiative, which aims to link local farmers with the tourism sector by incorporating locally sourced products into the supply chain. This project, led by multiple ministries in collaboration with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, not only promotes Fijian cuisine but also fosters sustainable tourism and reduces carbon emissions.
Gavoka also shared encouraging statistics, revealing a 16% increase in exports of fresh and chilled goods in the first half of 2024, accompanied by a 3% reduction in imports, which resulted in savings of $17 million for Fiji. Despite these advancements, he stressed the importance of continued efforts to provide farmers with essential training and access to markets.
He concluded his address with a call to action, urging collective efforts to build a strong agricultural sector that fights poverty and improves the living standards for all Fijians.
