Empowering Dreams: The Rise of Wananavu Earrings

A local entrepreneur, Iowana Salusalu, has successfully built her business, Wananavu Earrings, primarily focusing on handcrafted jewelry. Based in Qelekuro, Tailevu, Salusalu operates the business along with her six children, showcasing her dedication to both family and entrepreneurship.

Wananavu Earrings has become a notable presence in the area, especially for those visiting the beautiful landscapes near Natovi. Salusalu has been creating jewelry for over 20 years, catering to various customers, including those from luxury hotels like Shangri-La, and has continued her work despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since launching her business in 2019, Salusalu has been keen on using local materials, such as masi (bark cloth), to create unique pieces that resonate with her culture. Her efforts have led to a flourishing business that attracts both locals and tourists alike.

Currently, she collaborates with her daughter to further expand their operations, seeing promising opportunities for growth in the handcrafted jewelry market. The business has not only provided an income but has also become a learning platform for her children, instilling in them valuable life skills.

Salusalu emphasizes the importance of persistence in achieving her goals, stating that through dedication, she has been able to generate an income ranging from $200 to $400 a day by selling her products, which include necklaces, earrings, and bracelets.

Through her work, she aims to inspire other women in nearby communities to explore opportunities in small-scale business ventures. Salusalu encourages her fellow villagers to embrace the potential for growth and not to shy away from pursuing their passions in the craft and handicraft industry.
