Many individuals often overlook small entrepreneurial endeavors, unaware of the tremendous benefits they can provide. Fulori Waqasaqa, a 33-year-old woman from Namuaimada, Ra, exemplifies this principle through her thriving handicraft business in Bulileka, Labasa.
Fulori started her business only last year, witnessing significant support from her local community and family. Her education at a secondary school in Nasinu included programs focused on entrepreneurship, yet she never envisioned starting a business of her own until recently.
Now, she actively seeks to enhance her skills, hoping to accumulate the knowledge necessary to develop her enterprise further. “I have always desired to start a business, but now my dreams are becoming a reality,” she expressed.
Her crafting venture involves producing masi (a traditional Fijian cloth) and other handmade items. These products have gained popularity in local markets, with many customers eagerly placing orders, particularly from hotels like Koro Sun, Namela, and Tanoa. Sometimes, she even receives orders from Nausori, catering to students and various community organizations.
As this month unfolds with festive celebrations, she has noted a considerable increase in orders, alongside a decrease in the need for advertising her products. Pricing for her items starts at $5, and she envisions expanding her business by including additional handmade offerings, such as sauces and jams.
Fulori can produce 20 items in a single day, which can yield around $200 weekly. During busy occasions, such as fairs, her income can potentially reach $400 in one week. The revenue from her modest efforts significantly contributes to her household.
Fulori encourages others in her community to harness their talents for successful entrepreneurship. She believes that with God’s guidance, anyone can prosper despite the challenges that arise.
In summary, Fulori Waqasaqa’s story is a testament to the impact of small-scale entrepreneurship on individuals and their families. Her determination to succeed not only serves as an inspiration to others but also highlights the potential rewards of pursuing one’s passions. By nurturing our talents, even in small ways, we can create a positive ripple effect in our communities.
