World MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises) Day was observed on June 27th, emphasizing the vital role MSMEs play in fostering innovation, job creation, and sustainability. The theme for this year was “Small Business, Big Change.” Several members of the Building at Sunset community shared their motivations for pursuing entrepreneurship.
Fina Bakani Fisher, owner of Comfy Stays, operates a short-term rental business with two properties. Her motivation started with the desire to stay home with her children while earning income, but evolved into a pursuit of financial freedom. She is excited about the growth of her business, transitioning from a Facebook page to launching a dedicated website.
Sonam Nair, the managing director of Total Hygiene Solutions, began her cleaning business during the COVID-19 pandemic. With initial contracts from businesses needing cleaning services, her company now operates in the Suva-Nausori corridor, with plans for expansion. Her drive to create the business stemmed from her personal goals and the visible success of women entrepreneurs during the pandemic.
Veniana Ravesi, founder of Ravesi’s Kinetic Fitness, developed a passion for fitness in high school, leading her to create a welcoming space for others to pursue health and wellness. With over ten years of experience and multiple certifications, she believes in the transformative power of fitness, going beyond physical strength to foster confidence and resilience.
Kelera Lomaloma Mataika, founder of Atelier 153, is passionate about sustainability and innovation in construction. She started the Innovation in Construction Hub to integrate local expertise into the industry, aiming to address Fiji’s infrastructural challenges with new products and ideas.
