Paulina Naturaga aims to support her husband, who has been the family’s sole provider for the past twenty years. The resident of Naivaka, Nawakasiga, Bua, was one of 15 tenants from the Public Rental Board (PRB) in Simla, Lautoka, who recently graduated with a Certificate of Participation in Financial Literacy.
The training, which lasted three days, was organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in collaboration with the PRB. Ms. Naturaga, a mother of two, shared her journey, recalling her completion of Year 12 at Nadi SKM College. She previously worked at a pizza restaurant and later as a machinist at Ghimli Textiles until its closure in 2006. With her husband working as an electrician, she is motivated to take on additional responsibilities.
According to Ms. Naturaga, the training has significantly enhanced her understanding of business operations. “This study has been very handy for me as it has broadened my knowledge for my aspirations in business,” she stated. She envisions starting skills-based ventures such as fabric and tie-dye.
This session marks the first financial literacy training for PRB tenants in the western region, with plans for more sessions for tenants in Nadi and Lautoka in the future. Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Katamotu Nalumisa commended the graduates and urged them to implement their newfound knowledge in everyday situations.
“The training offers key insights into business management, financial literacy, and market connections, aimed at fostering entrepreneurial development among micro, small, and medium enterprises and facilitating networking,” Mr. Nalumisa noted, adding that it covers a range of subjects, including marketing strategies, business culture, recordkeeping, cash flow management, pricing, and profitability.
