The Amania Women’s Group from Nailega, Wainibuka, Tailevu, is making significant progress by transitioning from selling crafts and fresh produce by the roadside to showcasing their handmade creations at the bustling Christmas Market held at the Suva Civic Centre. This transformation highlights their ambition and hard work.

Yesterday, the group departed their village at 4 a.m., braving the chilly early hours to bring their goods to Suva, where they joined 40 other women entrepreneurs in this vibrant event that runs for the next two days. The festive atmosphere in Suva is providing these women, regardless of age, a wonderful platform to pursue financial independence.

Eleni Kaloulia, the group’s treasurer, expressed her excitement by calling the event a breakthrough after initially feeling that achieving financial independence was out of reach due to limited resources and ideas. “It was a huge success. We sold many mats and shopping chains and even received several custom orders for mats and nets,” she noted, which demonstrates their resourcefulness and creativity.

Despite facing obstacles in establishing their place in the business world with minimal support, the Amania Women’s Group remains resilient and focused on their mission. “Our ultimate goal is to raise the standard of living in our village,” Ms. Kaloulia stated, encapsulating their drive and determination.

This inspiring tale of the Amania Women’s Group serves as a testament to the strength of rural entrepreneurs and their ability to create opportunities for themselves and their communities. The group’s efforts not only benefit them individually but also contribute to uplifting their entire village, showcasing the power of entrepreneurship in fostering community development.

Overall, the step taken by these women conveys a hopeful message about persistence and the positive impact of small businesses on local economies.
