Empowering Communities through Eco-Tourism: A Path to Resilience

The spirit of teamwork and cooperation can lead us to positive outcomes in our endeavors. This sentiment is expressed by Taitusi Dradra, a young leader at Dradra Eco Tour in the Serua province. The business, which was established last year, aims to promote environmental conservation, especially in coastal areas.

Dradra points out that there are no organized efforts or government initiatives to address some of the policies regarding environmental preservation. He mentions that despite being well-versed in his community and frequently visiting various parts of Fiji, he has noticed a lack of initiatives taking place in Serua.

Having studied at Latianara College and later pursuing a degree in Marine Management from the University of the South Pacific, Dradra has returned to his roots with a mission. He reflects on how his education and experiences inspire him to give back to the community.

“I have returned with a commitment to support my community through learning and sharing knowledge,” he said. His efforts have focused on establishing a business that not only supports eco-tourism but also emphasizes the importance of environmental preservation.

He acknowledges the growing interest in tourism, which is expected to bring in revenue that can aid in various environmental initiatives. However, he emphasizes the need for effective policies to address climate change and ensure sustainability for future generations.

Local leaders are urged to seek out viable solutions and work collaboratively to promote nature-based solutions while encouraging community involvement in preserving the environment. The establishment of this business aims to foster community engagement and support local young people as well.

Dradra believes that a well-implemented community-based tourism model can successfully foster environmental conservation while providing economic opportunities. The popularity of distinctive local attractions can drive both domestic and international tourist interest.

Despite the challenges, there is a noticeable appreciation among the community members, as they begin to earn income and actively participate in local initiatives in Serua. Dradra encourages the community to maintain a forward-looking perspective and remain committed to sustainable practices to benefit future generations.
