Festivals like the Nasinu Festival – Girmit Night, which recently took place, play a crucial role in uniting individuals from various cultures and backgrounds. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized this point during the event. He noted that successful collaborations within communities not only enhance the local culture but also strengthen social connections, fostering a sense of cooperation.
Professor Prasad expressed his appreciation for the Nasinu Festival Charitable Trust Fund and the organizing team for reviving the festival after a five-year break. He expressed his hope that the event would continue to grow and maintain its importance within the Nasinu community.
Referred to as one of the most popular cultural gatherings nationwide, Girmit Night serves as a platform for community interaction, entertainment, and music, promoting unity among diverse ethnic groups. The festival aims to celebrate Nasinu’s rich cultural heritage while reinforcing community bonds.
Looking ahead, Professor Prasad announced that the Coalition Government will introduce a new National Development Plan next month, focusing on individual empowerment as a key driver for growth. He articulated a vision of empowering the people of Fiji through unity and collaboration.
As Nasinu and its environs evolve into significant urban centers, Professor Prasad highlighted the importance of urban development for social well-being, noting that 58% of the population currently resides in urban areas. He called for an inclusive approach to urban development that prioritizes livability, environmental sustainability, and economic growth.
Furthermore, he acknowledged the vital role that community-based, religious, and civil society organizations play in strengthening local communities. The government is committed to partnering with these organizations to enhance community empowerment, which he described as the foundation of a thriving democracy.
