Fisheries Minister Alita Bainivalu recently presented Cooperative Registrations to fishing groups from Namuana and Solovola villages in Kadavu, specifically for the Wailiwa Cooperative Limited and the Solovola Cooperative Limited. To bolster their fishing endeavors, she also provided essential equipment, such as nets and cooler boxes.
Naomi Naio from the Solovola Women’s Club expressed gratitude for this timely support, noting how it will enhance their livelihoods and make preparations easier for the upcoming festive season, as many extended families are expected to return to the village.
In addition to support for local fisheries, materials worth over $35,000 were delivered to Waqavesi Nariu through the Rural Housing Assistance Programme. This initiative aims to provide assistance to Vatukoula Gold Mine workers affected by recent redundancies.
Minister Bainivalu has taken this opportunity to encourage cooperatives to embrace growth prospects. She also recognized the contributions of Deputy Prime Minister and Trades Minister Manoa Kamikamica, along with Rural Development Minister Sakiasi Raisevu Ditoka, for their roles in facilitating these vital programs. She emphasized that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to foster stronger, self-sustaining communities.
In summary, these initiatives not only support the livelihoods of local fishers and alleviate the impact of redundancy for workers but also demonstrate a commitment to community resilience and development. Such support signifies a hopeful path toward strengthened local economies and enhanced community well-being, particularly as families gather during the festive season.
