Fisheries Minister Alita Bainivalu recently delivered Cooperative Registrations to fishers’ groups from Namuana and Solovola villages in Kadavu, specifically Wailiwa Cooperative Limited and Solovola Cooperative Limited. Alongside the registrations, the minister facilitated the provision of essential fishing gear, including nets and cooler boxes, to support these groups in their fishing ventures.
Naomi Naio from the Solovola Women’s Club expressed gratitude for this timely assistance, which is expected to enhance their livelihoods and assist in preparing for the festive season as families gather in the village.
Additionally, through the Rural Housing Assistance Programme, housing materials valued over $35,000 were provided to Waqavesi Nariu, aimed at supporting workers from the Vatukoula Gold Mine impacted by recent redundancies.
Minister Bainivalu encouraged the cooperatives to take advantage of the opportunities for growth and acknowledged the crucial support from Deputy Prime Minister and Trades Minister Manoa Kamikamica, along with Rural Development Minister Sakiasi Raisevu Ditoka. She emphasized that these initiatives are essential for “building stronger, self-sustaining communities.”
This collaborative effort not only boosts local economies but also fosters a sense of community resilience and hope for a brighter future. By investing in the livelihoods of these fishing communities and providing housing support to affected workers, the government is taking significant steps towards sustainable development and community empowerment.
Overall, these initiatives reflect a positive movement towards enhancing the quality of life for many, reinforcing the importance of cooperation and support during challenging times.
