Practicing safe sex, such as consistently using condoms, refraining from sharing needles, and regularly getting tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, is essential for reducing the risk of HIV transmission, according to Renata Ram, the UNAIDS HIV adviser in Fiji.
Ram emphasized the importance of being informed about options like pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and engaging with community-led initiatives and partnerships to reach at-risk populations effectively and ensure that no one is left behind.
She encouraged the public to reduce the stigma surrounding HIV by educating themselves and others about the realities of living with the virus. UNAIDS reminds everyone that discrimination against people living with HIV (PLHIV) is against the law in Fiji, whether it pertains to employment, housing, access to services and treatment, or the disclosure of HIV status without consent.
Ram noted that with appropriate treatment, HIV is a manageable condition, and early diagnosis combined with regular treatment can lead to a healthy and fulfilling life. She urged individuals to connect with healthcare providers to start or maintain antiretroviral therapy (ART) and seek support from organizations like FJN+ (Fiji Network of People Living with HIV) or Rainbow Pride Fiji.
She also mentioned the vital role of faith-based support in providing comfort and guidance within the community. Recently, faith-based organizations have taken a lead in discussions about HIV, which reassures the public that the issue is being prioritized by faith leaders.
Lastly, she highlighted the need for schools and parents to openly discuss sexual health as a key component of overall health and wellbeing, stressing that addressing sexual health should not be considered a taboo topic.
