The Ministry of Employment is set to engage community stakeholders for the first time to address issues related to labour mobility. This announcement was made by Maritino Nemani, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Employment.
Nemani explained that over the past 16 months, the Government has developed significant collaborations with various partners to tackle these challenges. He expressed the positive aspects of labour mobility, highlighting its benefits for individual livelihoods and the mutual advantages for countries involved, including Fiji and Australia.
He stated, “In the last 13 or 16 months, we have generated a lot of collaboration between key stakeholders to ensure everyone plays their part.” He emphasized that past efforts often failed due to a lack of support for workers dealing with issues abroad.
Collaborative efforts are now being focused on involving families in the pre-departure processes, allowing them to be informed and aligned with expectations as their loved ones move overseas. Nemani noted that this enhanced cooperation is vital for lessening the impacts of labour mobility on both workers and their families.
