The recent inauguration of the Savusavu Mabe Pearl Oyster and Handicraft showroom in Cakaudrove marks a significant milestone for communities involved in Mabe pearl farming. This new facility, which serves as a center for grafting, value addition, design, and marketing, was officially opened by Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Alitia Bainivalu, last week.
During the opening, Minister Bainivalu emphasized the showroom’s goal of supporting and enhancing the livelihoods of coastal communities that engage in Mabe pearl farming in the Cakaudrove region. She highlighted the collaborative effort between the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the University of Sunshine Coast, the Ministry of Fisheries, and local Mabe pearl farmers, which underscores a successful partnership established since the 1980s with initiatives like the development of Giant Clams at Makogai Island.
Building on past successes, the Ministry of Fisheries expanded its collaboration in 2009 to include additional sustainable aquaculture projects like the cultivation of freshwater prawns, showcasing a long-term commitment to community development and sustainable practices.
Minister Bainivalu noted that the Savusavu Mabe Pearl and Handicraft showroom represents not merely an economic opportunity but a platform aimed at preserving traditional crafts, empowering local artisans, and stimulating economic activity in the area. The unique handicrafts produced from Mabe pearls are anticipated to instill pride among the communities and create sustainable income avenues.
The showroom will also host workshops for fisheries officers and community members, teaching the skills necessary to transform raw shells into beautiful handicrafts. This initiative signifies a united vision of community empowerment, environmental protection, and economic development, as emphasized by Minister Bainivalu. She remarked that by nurturing resilience and providing growth opportunities, coastal communities can prosper while honoring their rich cultural and natural heritage.
In summary, the establishment of the Savusavu Mabe Pearl Oyster and Handicraft showroom is poised to empower coastal communities, promote traditional skills, and enhance sustainable income generation, paving the way for a brighter and more resilient future for the region.
