In Kavewa, Nadogo, Macuata, women have been collaborating effectively on a variety of tasks, as highlighted by Talei Silibaravi, a member of the emerging Cagimaiwai Women’s Club. She emphasizes the importance of adapting to changing times and fostering development in their community.

The women of Kavewa have demonstrated significant progress in their initiatives, benefitting from the support of local men. The Cagimaiwai Women’s Club has been operational for a considerable time, and since 2011, women have been encouraged to lead in various community services and projects.

Currently, the group consists of about 30 women, some of whom are over 70 years old, actively mentoring younger members. Their initiatives have included seeking support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for biogas projects, which led to the acquisition of 24 ‘Home Biogas’ systems to enhance their livelihoods.

Additionally, the women are currently working on constructing a house to accommodate a solar freezer, which will aid in preserving fish and livestock, ensuring a sustainable food source for the community. Given their island location and reliance on fishing, these developments are crucial as they strive for self-sufficiency.

The women also participate in a self-help program that enhances their efforts and boosts their community engagement. They regularly organize clean-up campaigns to maintain the village and have partnered with the World Wildlife Fund to protect local fauna and flora, particularly in areas that are increasingly difficult to access.

Their active involvement extends to improving village infrastructure and engaging in small-scale community programs, greatly supported by tribal leaders and younger community members.

The Cagimaiwai Women’s Club is embarking on a journey to become more cooperative in the coming months, hoping to enhance their collective impact. While challenges exist, such as the need for more government support and educational resources, the determination of these women offers a hopeful outlook for their continued progress and empowerment within their community.

Overall, the initiatives and collaborative spirit of the women of Kavewa serve as a powerful example of community development and resilience, illustrating the positive changes that can occur through localized efforts and support.
