Empowering Change: The Inspiring Stories Behind Fijian Entrepreneurs

World MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises) Day was observed on June 27, focusing on the vital roles these businesses play in fostering innovation, creating jobs, and promoting sustainability. This year’s theme, “Small Business, Big Change,” inspired several members of the Building at Sunset community to share their entrepreneurial journeys.

Fina Bakani Fisher, the owner of Comfy Stays, operates a short-term rental accommodation business with two properties listed: a two-bedroom, one-bath setup in Laucala Beach Estate for $200 per night and a five-bedroom, 4.5-bath setup in Pacific Harbour for $750 per night. Fina’s initial motivation to start her business was to balance working from home while caring for her children and contributing to family finances. Over time, her focus shifted toward achieving financial independence, and she is excited to transition from her current Facebook page to launching a dedicated website.

Sonam Nair, managing director of Total Hygiene Solutions, began her cleaning business during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Her decision was influenced by commitments from several local businesses needing cleaning services. Based in the Suva-Nausori corridor, Sonam plans to expand her offerings to additional towns. Her motivation stems from personal aspirations, values, and a longstanding interest in entrepreneurship, coupled with the increased demand for hygiene services during the pandemic.

Veniana Ravesi, founder of Ravesi’s Kinetic Fitness, has a deep-rooted passion for fitness that began in her high school years. With over a decade of experience and certifications in numerous fitness disciplines, Veniana aims to provide a supportive environment for all individuals to achieve their health and wellness goals. Her journey reflects the broader impact of fitness on self-confidence and quality of life.

Kelera Lomaloma Mataika, founder of Atelier 153, is dedicated to sustainability, construction, and innovation within the architectural design sector. Her initiative, the Innovation in Construction Hub, seeks to bring together various skills from the existing trade industry to address Fiji’s infrastructural challenges by utilizing local and indigenous expertise.

These entrepreneurs exemplify the spirit of MSME Day, showcasing how small businesses drive significant changes in their communities.
