This year’s Hibiscus Festival in Suva was marked by more than just its location and atmosphere. Attendees at the festival noticed the exceptionally clean surroundings of the foreshore and seawall, thanks to the efforts of the Raiwaqa Unem Association.

An interview with Ratu Kiniviliame Narokete, a member of the Unem Association and its leader at the festival, shed light on the motivations behind this empowered group of young people and their positive impact on the local community of Raiwaqa. Ratu Kini, who is 56 and hails from Tavuki in Kadavu, emphasizes that it’s never too late to make meaningful changes in life.

The association was originally informal, initiated by local elders as a way for youth to engage in community activities during school breaks. However, it eventually dissolved, leading some young people into negative paths. Ratu Kini and a few like-minded individuals sought to reverse this trend by organizing community work, such as cleaning streets and assisting elderly residents who couldn’t afford these services.

Recognizing the positive impact of their efforts, Ratu Kini broadened the initiative after relocating to Tilak Lane, incorporating youth from Milverton Road. This led to the formal registration of the association and the establishment of a bank account.

The majority of the members are unemployed youth from Raiwaqa, many from challenging family backgrounds. Ratu Kini has sought to instill a sense of purpose and belonging in these young individuals through community service.

Faith plays a significant role in the association’s approach, with Ratu Kini emphasizing the importance of biblical teachings and a personal relationship with Jesus as a foundation for real change.

The association’s reputation grew, culminating in a partnership with the Suva City Council, which invited them to manage waste collection and cleanliness at the Hibiscus venue this year. A dedicated team of 20 youths worked two shifts throughout the event, impressing local businesses and city council officials alike.

Ratu Kini expressed pride in his team’s commitment and collaboration, viewing this experience as a stepping stone for future opportunities. He hopes the council will recognize their potential beyond what professional contractors offer.

He extended gratitude to the Raiwaqa community for their support and encouraged struggling youths to believe in their ability to enact change, reminding them to trust in the Lord for guidance in their lives.
