Driven by a heartfelt wish to positively impact the lives of others, Kelvin Kaveesh Gounder, a 20-year-old psychology student at the University of the South Pacific, is set on a path toward community service and mental health support. Living in Nakasi, Gounder is focused on developing skills in counseling and advocacy to effectively address complex psychosocial issues.
Gounder believes that his education will enable him to contribute meaningfully to social change. He finds fulfillment in supporting individuals through their struggles, seeing it as a deeply rewarding aspect of psychology and social work. Reflecting on his studies, he noted, “I studied Japanese culture in psychology,” recognizing the rich historical and social context of Japan as a fascinating area for practical application in social work.
His academic journey has been complemented by practical experience at the USP, enhancing his understanding of the field. A highlight of his experience was participating in the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) program, which allowed him to immerse himself in Japanese culture. More than just travel, Gounder expressed a desire to build meaningful connections with local communities in Japan and participate in arts and cultural activities.
Notably, Gounder is also a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Fiji, which reinforces his commitment to community involvement and promotes vegetarianism. He appreciates the parallels between Hindu beliefs and aspects of Japanese spirituality, noting the cultural commonalities he observed during his studies.
