Army wives in Fiji will soon have enhanced opportunities to develop their handicraft skills, allowing them to contribute financially to their families. Under the initiative led by Talei Vodo from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) engineers wives and mothers’ club, a series of programs will replace the traditional practice of gathering for kava barrels with more constructive activities focused on skill development.
Following reported issues arising from the gatherings, a five-day workshop was organized to teach women skills in tailoring, fabric art, jewelry making, and contemporary weaving. Participants received certificates upon completion, which may assist them in applying for government grants to start small businesses. Vodo believes that this initiative can transform how army wives engage with their community and manage their finances, making their meetings more productive.
Vodo noted that many new wives were dissuaded by their husbands from joining the club due to the prevailing culture surrounding kava gatherings and nightlife, which they recognized as a negative influence. This new approach aims to create a positive environment that encourages women to learn and grow, ultimately empowering them to take charge of their financial futures.
The workshop was conducted by experts, including solo designer Angie Rakai-Niumataiwalu, and was accessible to the wider army wives’ community to foster inclusiveness. The RFMF wives and mothers’ club committee partially funded the initiative, making participation affordable at just $45 each.
This initiative echoes similar movements in other communities, where women have turned to various crafts as sustainable income sources. For instance, artisans from the Naboumasi-masi Pottery Club in Lawai village have shifted from agricultural work to crafting pottery, effectively utilizing local resources and transforming their craft into a vital economic driver for their families and community. The successes from these projects highlight the resilience and creativity of women across the region, showcasing their potential to uplift their communities while gaining independence.
Overall, this initiative is a promising step toward supporting the growth of female entrepreneurship within military families, encouraging a culture of skill enhancement, financial independence, and community engagement. By focusing on capacity building and economic empowerment, these women can work toward creating a brighter future for themselves and their families.
