Empowered by Love: A Mother’s Market Journey

Lenisa Vurusa finds immense fulfillment in her role as a market vendor, a position she has held for over a decade to support her four children’s education. Hailing from Wainikai in Namosi, she embodies the spirit of hardworking mothers who brave the elements daily to provide for their families.

Vurusa began her market career around 2006 or 2007, driven by a commitment to securing her children’s future. “I love being a market vendor because it supports my family and ensures my children have the best education,” she expressed. Her children—Lavenia Adi Bilo, Eremasi Vuki, Ponipote Nayavusowata, and Tevita Rayaseyase—are her primary motivation.

Her dedication to her family’s wellbeing is evident, as she hopes to see her children succeed in life. Vurusa noted, “Everything I do is for their future as successful Fijians.” She has observed a growing interest among consumers in purchasing local produce, which she facilitates with pride.

Although vegetable prices have recently dropped, Vurusa remains content serving a variety of customers. She appreciates the autonomy her work provides, allowing her the chance to be her own boss. However, her aspirations once revolved around becoming a nurse, a dream that was ultimately curtailed due to financial difficulties. “Being a nurse was my ultimate dream because I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives,” she recalled.

Despite setbacks, Vurusa exudes confidence and has no regrets about her path. During her rare moments of relaxation, she enjoys basking in the sun by the sea. Looking ahead, she aspires to continue her work for the next five years and encourages others facing challenges to remain strong and resilient.

“My message to those struggling is to stay determined and keep fighting,” she advised. “The road to success is ongoing, and with faith and hard work, everything will fall into place.”
