Empowered by Handcraft: A Local Entrepreneur’s Journey

A local entrepreneur has made significant strides in her business journey, particularly in harnessing handmade crafts. Iowana Salusalu, who runs her business named Wananavu Earrings from Qelekuro, Tailevu, is showcasing what can be accomplished through dedication and skill.

Located near the scenic waters of Natovi, her venture has become a point of interest within the community. For the past 20 years, Salusalu has been involved in various hotel operations in the region, and during the challenging times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, she ventured into crafting from home to create a new source of income.

In 2019, she officially began her business, recognizing the potential for growth in handmade products. Salusalu uses materials from Vatulele to create unique designs that include earrings, pendants, and other jewelry items.

Currently, she operates her business alongside her daughter, noting that they have seen considerable progress in their operations and customer service. Many locals frequently visit her store, drawn by the beauty of the items on display.

“Our goal is to earn at least $2 a day, which can accumulate to a significant amount over a week,” she said.

Her products typically range from $2 to $4, with sets available at $55. On a good day, her business can earn between $200 to $400.

The success of her small business heavily relies on the support from her children who are learning valuable skills while assisting her. Salusalu continues to encourage fellow local entrepreneurs to persist and move forward rather than look back, emphasizing that more achievements can be realized with perseverance.
