Women are being urged to support young individuals looking to launch their own businesses.

Losana Marama, a representative from West Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, addressed attendees at a women’s conference held at Gurukul Primary School in Saweni, Lautoka, discussing the Young Entrepreneurship Scheme (YES) program.

Ms. Marama highlighted that the scheme aims to offer grants to emerging entrepreneurs with innovative and viable business ideas. The Ministry of Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport provides financial backing of up to $30,000 for successful entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 40 to either develop or expand their creative business concepts.

“If your child has innovative and creative ideas, they can access this funding,” Ms. Marama stated. She noted that young people sometimes draw inspiration from trending business concepts on TikTok that haven’t yet reached Fiji, and the program is designed to assist them in obtaining the necessary funds.

“The limit is $30,000. It is a grant, not a loan. It is fully funded. If you see potential in a child, try to motivate and empower them,” she added.

Ms. Marama emphasized that the Government acknowledges the vital contributions young entrepreneurs make to economic growth. She urged parents and guardians to inspire their children to become ‘job creators’ rather than ‘job seekers.’

The West Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) office is located at Rogorogoivuda House in Lautoka.
