Emotional Tributes Flow at Remembrance Day in Labasa

Spread the love

Cynthia Latchman felt an overwhelming sense of emotion to finally honor her late father, James Latchman, during a recent Remembrance Day ceremony in Labasa. At just 26 years old, Cynthia reflected on the loss of her father when she was only three years old, recalling his passing after a short illness 23 years ago.

Traveling from Savusavu, Cynthia expressed her desire to share this emotional moment with other families who have lost loved ones in service. “I have little memories of him and could only wish he was beside me,” she said, cherishing the opportunity to be part of the annual remembrance at Sukanaivalu Army Barracks in Vaturekuka.

Similarly, Meredani Sakealevu, 50, attended the ceremony to honor her late husband, Maciu, who died due to coronavirus in September 2021. She shared that life has changed drastically since his passing, but she takes pride in his dedication to serving as a soldier for 30 years. “I dearly miss him,” she lamented, emphasizing the personal loss felt by families of fallen soldiers.

The gathering was further commemorated by Major Penasio Maumau, the officer in command at the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces Sukanaivalu Barracks, who assured attendees that the sacrifices of their fallen comrades would always be honored and remembered.

This heartfelt tribute not only provided a moment of connection for families but also served as a reminder of the bravery and dedication of those who serve. Such events are vital in fostering a sense of community, allowing individuals to share their grief and celebrate the lives of those they have lost.

Overall, the Remembrance Day event highlighted resilience and unity among families who, despite their heartache, come together to honor the enduring legacy of their loved ones.
