Cynthia Latchman experienced a deeply emotional moment as she was finally able to honor her late father, James Latchman, during a poignant Remembrance Day event in Labasa. Suffering the loss of her father at such a young age—just three years old—has shaped her memories and feelings profoundly. Cynthia, now 26, traveled from Savusavu to the Sukanaivalu Army Barrack in Vaturekuka, expressing her desire to join other families of fallen soldiers in remembering their loved ones.
Reflecting on her father’s service of around 15 years, she shared, “I was very young when my dad passed away in 1995. I have little memories of him and could only wish he was beside me.” The annual remembrance provided her with an opportunity to connect with others who share similar experiences of loss.
Meredani Sakealevu, another attendee, reflected on the enduring pain following the loss of her husband, Maciu, who passed away due to coronavirus in September 2021. As she spoke about him, the mother of two noted, “Life has never been the same after his sudden passing away. While I am proud of his 30 years of service as a private soldier, I dearly miss him.” Meredani, too, felt the significance of the event in remembering her loved one.
During the ceremony, Major Penasio Maumau, the officer in command of the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces Sukanaivalu Barracks, assured all present that the sacrifices made by the fallen comrades will always be honored and remembered.
This event not only served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served but also as a healing space for families grappling with their losses. It highlights the importance of community support and collective remembrance in the journey of healing from grief.
In conclusion, such commemorative events play a vital role in recognizing the bravery and dedication of service members while also providing families with a sense of unity and shared understanding in their periods of mourning.
