Emotional Reunions at CRW Anniversary: A Pardon and Memories

Spread the love

Shane Stevens, a former member of the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces’ Counter Revolutionary Warfare (CRW) unit, participated in the 24th anniversary celebration of the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua. During the event, he shared poignant moments with the families of CRW soldiers who lost their lives during the attempted mutiny.

While Stevens refrained from addressing the media, he played a significant role in the reconciliation and restoration ceremony overseen by RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. This comes after Stevens received a Presidential pardon in September from the Mercy Commission following a life sentence for incitement to mutiny. He had spent 21 years, 8 months, and 20 days in Naboro Prison before his release, which was recommended by the Fiji Corrections Service due to his commendable behavior during incarceration.

Notably, Stevens was released alongside George Speight, the leader of the 2000 coup. The event also saw the presence of former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho. They were invited by current Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who sought their temporary release from prison to attend the ceremony aimed at promoting reconciliation within the military.

This gathering serves as a reminder of the importance of healing and unity in the nation after a tumultuous period. With continued efforts toward reconciliation, there is hope for a brighter and more cohesive future for Fiji.

In summary, the anniversary event marks a significant moment for those involved, emphasizing the ongoing journey toward healing and understanding within the community. The willingness to participate in such ceremonies reflects a commitment to moving forward positively.
