Emotional Reunion at Fiji’s Military Anniversary: A Pardon and Reflections

Spread the love

Shane Stevens, a former member of the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces Commander Revolutionary Warfare (CRW) unit, attended the 24th anniversary of the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua, reconnecting with the families of CRW soldiers who lost their lives during the attempted mutiny.

During the event, Stevens participated in an emotional reconciliation and restoration ceremony led by RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. While he chose not to speak to the media, his presence was significant, especially following his recent release from a life sentence for incitement to mutiny. Stevens received a Presidential pardon from the Mercy Commission in September, having served 21 years and over 7934 days in Naboro Prison. His positive progress during incarceration was a key factor in his release.

Notably, former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho were also invited to the anniversary, having been released temporarily at the request of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. However, they were unable to attend the military’s traditional apology presentations due to their ongoing prison sentences.

This event signifies a step towards reconciliation and healing within the Fiji military community, marking a hopeful move towards unifying those affected by past conflicts.

In summary, Shane Stevens’ participation in the anniversary event reflects not just personal redemption but a broader commitment to healing and reconciliation for those impacted by Fiji’s tumultuous past. The emphasis on such ceremonies can pave the way for future dialogue and peace among all parties involved.
