In a landmark decision, the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) has elected Mrs Emma Waiwai as the first female President in its history. The monumental decision took place during the Annual General Assembly in Port Moresby and signifies the committee’s dedication to gender equality and forward-thinking leadership.
Waiwai, an active member of PNGOC for several years, brings a great deal of experience and a unique point of view to her new role. Her election ends up being a testament to her dedication and the membership’s faith in her ability to steer the committee into a future of growth and triumph.
Alongside Waiwai, the elections witnessed Elaine Iorive assuming the role of Treasurer, Gomara Gorua becoming the Legal Advisor, and Ryan Pini who was elected unopposed as Chairman of Fundraising. These new appointments aim to fortify the leadership board and boost the operational efficiency of PNGOC.
During the event, the outgoing President, Sir John Dawanincura, received Life Membership as a token of appreciation for his prolonged service and commitment to PNGOC and sports in the country. His term has seen many accomplishments, including the 2015 Pacific Games and establishing a permanent home and office for PNGOC. As the torch is passed onto the new leadership under Emma Waiwai, Sir John’s legacy continues to inspire and guide the committee.
