The National Disaster Management Office has set up three evacuation centers in the Central Division to provide shelter for residents affected by flooding in Vatuwaqa and Wailoku, Suva. According to NDMO, families are currently being housed at St Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.
Residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas are being warned to remain cautious due to heavy overnight rainfall that has caused river levels to rise and resulted in flooding. The National Emergency Operation Centre has been partially activated, and NDMO is collaborating with relevant authorities to monitor the situation closely.
The intense rainfall has led to flooding in several towns and communities, impacting minor roads and bridges. NDMO reported that some locations are experiencing landslides and traffic disruptions, urging the public to avoid unnecessary travel in these affected areas.
The safety of the public is the top priority at this moment. Those needing assistance to relocate to higher ground are encouraged to reach out to the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority. Additionally, NDMO advises individuals to stay away from flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where water levels are above the knee.
This precaution is essential for personal safety and to reduce the risk of life-threatening situations for both the public and first responders. Floodwaters may contain contaminants, and the public is urged to avoid contact whenever possible. Awareness of potential health risks such as leptospirosis, typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea is crucial following heavy rainfall.
