The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has set up three evacuation centers in the Central Division to provide shelter for residents impacted by flooding in Vatuwaqa and Wailoku, Suva. Affected families are currently staying at St. Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.
In a statement, NDMO warned residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas to take precautions, as heavy rain overnight has led to increased river levels and flooding. The National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has also been partially activated, with NDMO collaborating with relevant authorities to monitor the situation closely.
The intense rainfall has resulted in flooding across various towns and communities, affecting minor roads and bridges. NDMO reported that some locations are dealing with landslides and traffic disruptions, urging the public in these areas to avoid unnecessary travel.
“Public safety is the top priority at this time. If individuals require assistance to reach higher ground, they should contact the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority,” NDMO stated.
Additionally, the NDMO has advised people to stay away from flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where water levels exceed knee height. This precaution is vital for ensuring personal safety and reducing the risk of life-threatening scenarios for both the public and first responders.
Floodwaters may carry contaminants, and the public is encouraged to limit contact with water when possible. Residents should also be aware of health risks such as leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue fever, and diarrhea following heavy rain.
