Embracing Unity: Lessons from Prophet Muhammad’s Teachings in Fiji

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Professor Biman Prasad emphasized the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, highlighting his messages of peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical behavior. He made these remarks while extending warm wishes to Fiji’s Muslim community during the celebration of the Prophet’s birthday.

Professor Prasad noted that the principles of social, ethical, moral, and religious conduct form the foundation for social, economic, and political progress. He recognized the valuable contributions of all religious groups to the nation, particularly the Muslim community, which plays a crucial role in the country’s development.

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that these principles foster enduring peace, harmony, and tolerance, which are essential for inclusivity, equality, dignity, and justice. He recalled the significant moment in 1974 when the National Federation Party, led by then Opposition Leader Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya, successfully negotiated with Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara to designate the celebrations of Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays, reflecting bipartisanship in the national interest.

In closing, he wished the Muslim community a joyous celebration of their Prophet’s Birthday within Fiji’s diverse cultural and religious landscape.
