The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has officially ordered the closure of the Ellington wharf in Rakiraki, effective from 5:00 PM on January 6, until further notice. MSAF’s CEO, Joeli Cawaki, communicated this decision to all relevant stakeholders, including ship owners, masters, shipping companies, marine service providers, and agents.

The closure is prompted by significant structural damage observed at the wharf. During a visit by The Fiji Times, large cracks were visible along the jetty’s approach, which was weighed down by filled sacks and heavy road materials. Additionally, the concrete along the wharf displayed notable breaks.

Despite the order, the Goundar Shipping vessel, Joseph P, operated as scheduled, departing the damaged wharf at 5:45 PM after loading passengers, cargo, and vehicles.

This closure emphasizes the need for safety and maintenance in maritime infrastructure, a crucial component for the region’s connectivity. The proactive steps taken by the MSAF indicate their commitment to ensuring the safety of all users of the port facilities.

In light of the situation, it is hoped that necessary repairs will be commenced promptly, ensuring that the wharf can safely resume operations, fostering continued growth and stability in the maritime sector.
