The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) announced the closure of Ellington wharf in Rakiraki due to significant damage observed at the facility. MSAF’s CEO Joeli Cawaki issued the directive that affects all stakeholders, including ship owners, masters, shipping companies, marine service providers, and agents. The closure is effective from 5:00 PM on January 6 until further notice.
During a recent visit to the wharf, the Goundar Shipping vessel, Joseph P, was observed loading passengers, cargo, and vehicles despite the impending closure. Significant structural issues were noted, including large cracks on the jetty’s approach and extensive breaks in the concrete structure.
The vessel departed the wharf at 5:45 PM, marking one of the last operations conducted before the closure takes effect.
While the closure of the wharf poses challenges for transportation and shipping in the area, it emphasizes the importance of safety and infrastructure integrity. This proactive measure by MSAF aims to prevent potential accidents and injuries, ensuring the well-being of everyone involved in maritime activities.
In the longer term, maintaining and upgrading such vital infrastructure could lead to improved facilities for the community, ultimately enhancing safety and efficiency in maritime operations in Fiji.
