Eleven prison officers from the Suva Remand Centre have been identified as suspects in a case involving illicit favours received from detainee Jung Young Kim. The officers and their families were alleged to have received free meals and groceries from Grace Road businesses in Suva, following an investigation conducted by the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS).
This alleged misconduct violates the ethical standards and regulations that guide the conduct of FCS staff, leading to potential disciplinary actions as dictated by FCS policies. The Commissioner of the FCS, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, emphasized the importance of integrity and professionalism among officers, stating that misconduct would not be tolerated.
Dr. Nakarawa assured the public that measures are being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. Furthermore, he noted that the FCS continues to be committed to abiding by the law and maintaining high standards of conduct among all personnel. Additional details about the disciplinary actions will be managed internally to respect the privacy of those involved.
The FCS is dedicated to the secure and humane treatment of offenders as well as their subsequent rehabilitation and reintegration into society, emphasized Dr. Nakarawa.
