Electoral Commission Urges Patience Amid FijiFirst Appeal Drama

The chair of the Electoral Commission (EC), Barbara Malimali, has urged the public to remain patient as the commission works through an appeal from Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj regarding the deregistration of FijiFirst. In a recent media interaction, Malimali stated that the hearing is still in progress, and it is the EC’s responsibility to release their findings once the hearing concludes.

She emphasized the commission’s commitment to fairness for both parties involved, acknowledging the public’s desire for updates. “We will communicate our findings through a press release at the conclusion. I apologize for the wait, but it is essential,” she mentioned.

Malimali stressed the importance of taking the necessary time to ensure accurate decisions, stating, “We would rather take time and do it right than rush and make mistakes.” She noted that both parties have had the opportunity to present their cases during preliminary hearings, and the EC is dedicated to hearing all perspectives on the matter.

While there may be some frustration due to the delay, Malimali reaffirmed the commission’s obligation to hear all parties, including Maharaj and the Registrar of Political Parties. She concluded by saying that the commission values thoroughness over speed in their decision-making process.
